Okay, recognize Nadia (of course) and the Ginger maid (sorry, forgot her name), but, is that Patience or another girl we haven’t been introduced to before? and can we be introduced prettyplease?
Hmmm, thought it might have been Patience (she and Nadia seem to be an item, not exactely exclusive, but don’t see either complaining :D), but can’t see her nose very well from this angle
… historical evidence suggests the Amazons removed one of their breasts so it wouldn’t get in the way of their archery.
So no, you clearly don’t have the confidence of an Amazon. ^_^
I’m not sure this is as historically evident as it might first appear. I’ve done archery. I’ve done archery with female participants. No one’s ever had breast trouble. It might be that some exceptionally endowed women might have size issues, but I find it unlikely that a whole culture of breast cutting might have stemmed from the needs of a few large-breasted women.
So while I keep hearing about amazons removing their right breast, there doesn’t seem to be strong evidence to support that claim. (From Wikipedia: “There is no indication of such a practice in works of art, in which the Amazons are always represented with both breasts, although the left is frequently covered.)
I would not be unhappy to be proven wrong. ^^ It always seemed such a ghastly tradition to me.
Jaycee
Same here. It also occurs to me that if such things were done, it would be more likely for religious reasons than pragmatic ones.

… I think you underestimate how dangerous classical antiquity was for women. Any wo.an who lived independent and free would need every edge she could get.
Guesticus
It’s more than likely that any Amazon who only had one breast would have had that done to them after being captured by men
Archery was not the only form of combat for Amazons
Gallstone
Or perhaps they would have done it to dissuade men. Women perceived as mutilated would be less attractive to slavers.
Even today, there are people who place rings around the necks of their womenfolk, gradually stretching them to the point that they’d collapse if the rings were ever removed — a holdover from an old custom to dissuade slavers by making their womenfolk look deformed.
Jaycee
As Sylvaton mentions (below), there’s not a lot of historical evidence to support the existence amazon culture. Their origin also goes back to Antiquity (i.e. pre-Abrahamic religion times, if I’m not mistaken), back where women might not have been as poorly treated (but historians in the audience may correct me if I’m wrong).
I’m not sure how effective breast removal would have deterred men determined to dominate women. Male domination isn’t about the sexual attributes of the female, but rather stems from complex (some might say ‘deviant’) needs to control her. I wonder if this practice still exists today in some remote/isolated cultures (especially those without access to much historical information). Studying these cases might reveal interesting information as to why it’s done.

“I’m doing it.”

I didn’t mean the mutilation was meant to prevent attempts at domination, but attempts at enslavement.
That thing with the neck-rings I mentioned was meant to prevent slavers from running off with the women. The kind of people who buy from slavers go for looks and marketable skills, after all. If presented with ‘damaged goods’, they tend not to buy.
Guesticus
Actually, the neck rings is a sign of looks: they put the rings on to make them more attractive (same reason they put dinner plates through their lips)
Gallstone
Ah, I can see the confusion. That’s a different group of people. The ones I’m talking about live in cold mountain highlands, and they start the rings up at a young age, gradually adding rings and stretching the neck until those become really long. The term ‘giraffe woman’, while insulting, is entirely appropriate…

“… I think you underestimate how dangerous classical antiquity was for women. Any wo.an who lived independent and free would need every edge she could get.”
And I think you underestimate how dangerous “classical” medicine was for women. And men, for that matter. But the dangers involved in such an amputation plus the recovery time needed and the lingering effects on health and even things such as balance would far outweigh any fleeting (and most likely invented) benefit in combat.
Pretty sexy. Not sure if she’s ever held a bow in her life, but who cares, right? 😉

“I’m doing it.”
Guesticus
Looks like she is holding it better than most people
Jaycee
For a moment, I thought you might be right, then I remembered my archery classes from 2 years ago. 2 major errors:
– Her left arm is at an angle instead of straight ahead. You can’t hold a bow like this if you want any kind of strength to it. (My guess is it’s probably very weak.)
– She’s not aiming it. The little red “thingie” on the bow is what you use to aim–it must be at eye level or you’re just shooting randomly. If you look at the picture I posted above, the upper part of the bow string is close to the archer’s cheek and the arrow is close to the eye, making hitting the target more likely.
So yeah, my suspicion is confirmed, the girl’s not an archer. But who the heck cares! 🙂
–Jaycee
“I’m doing it.”
Guesticus
True, but she is still holding it better than most 😛
Oberon
From what we can see of her left forearm, she isn’t an archer. Either she would be wearing a bracer or her forearm would show the scaring of frequent forearm slap.
The girl – WOW! Pretty and sexy! Nice torpedo boobs!
Anyway, drool wiped from chin:
I found this, it goes to explain things.
Everyone knows the story of how the Amazons cut off their right breasts so they wouldn’t interfere with the use of the bow.
Trouble is, the story is a crock — an old crock, but a crock nonetheless.
This element of the Amazon myth was invented in the 5th century B.C. The poor Amazons had to start mutilating themselves because some big boob thoughtlessly dabbled in the dark art of etymology without the proper equipment.
*** here is the explanation ***
Hellanicus of Lesbos imagined the name was derived from the Greek prefix a- (“without”) and mazos, a variant of mastos (“breast”). He was surely wrong, but his folk etymology is still firmly embedded in the collective consciousness after more than two dozen centuries.
There was no hint before his time, either in writing or art, that the Amazons had anything other than usual complement of breasts, so we can safely assume that the one-breasted image we have of them flowed from the (false) etymology and not vice versa.
Well, actually there is no *historical* evidence for Amazons, just a lot of mythology that mostly traces back to Greece. The tribe is always described as being somewhere beyond the bounds of whatever the current civilized world is. “Amazon” was given a “just-so” etymology of a- (without) and mazos (breast), but the actual history of the word is a little murkier. Also, most classical depictions of Amazons show them with two breasts. And as Jaycee points out, there’s no real benefit/need to remove a breast for archery.
Well, this said, it gave me an excuse to put up a photo of a babe shooting a bow.

You needed a reason to put up a photo of a babe shooting a bow? I don’t think any of us would’ve complained if you just put up random pictures of sexy women up for no reason. lol
Jaycee
LOL. I did that for a while (Sexy Vignettes 1-18), but just decided it didn’t fit the site very well, so I stopped. But hey, when I saw that bodacious archer, I just couldn’t resist. 🙂
Yeah, I find her just as sexy as the other women. Unless she wants to be muscular like Nadia, then she shouldn’t feel ‘lacking’ in anything at all like you said.

Dont worry Marie, you still look great at least.

Second panel: she looks absolutely adorably beautiful..
I’d rather do her (until she walked bandy-legged) than the amazon girl..
Jaycee
Me: why choose? 🙂

Because Nadia would turn you into a fluffer-toy, rather than a lover, and then walk away with her latest girlfriend without looking back at you?

Call me odd.. but I’m unsure of women who have more muscles in their clitoris than I have in my penis..
*lick lick*
“TWANNNG… Aaaahhhh”
*flies across room, catapulted by erecting Amazonian clitoris*

Confidence of an amazon, meet actual amazon.
